Professionals Offer Advice for Students Consider a Career as a Therapist
Choosing a career is never an easy task. However, choosing a career in the mental health field is becoming increasingly difficult. The cost of education continue to rise while the average income of therapists continues to decrease, particularly for young therapists. With the rising debates about managed care, the empirically supported treatments, and other changes in the mental health industry, it is important to be thorough about your decision to enter this field.
Most therapist early in their training or maybe before beginning their training hear horror stories about the field. It is not uncommon to hear that the only way you can make it in this field is by becoming a solution-focused therapist. Increasingly, students choose their oreintation because of pressure and fear instead of finding which approach is the best fit for them. Despite what you may hear in the horror stories, it is quite possible to have a successful career as a depth psychotherapist. Often the people who encounter the greatest struggles have either not been properly trained or are not committed to become a quality depth psychotherapist.
